KENYA TOPS MEDAL STANDINGS AS THE WORLD U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS CLOSE

Kenya successfully hosted the World Under 20 athletics Championships from 18th to 22nd August 2021. The event attracted over 1,300 participants from 128 countries. The flag was passed from Nairobi, Kenya to Cali, Colombia at a colorful closing ceremony held in Nairobi on 22nd August 2021.

wu20 2The five day event saw Kenya finish at the top of the medal standings as the curtains were drawn on the 18th edition of the event. Kenya bagged 16 medals in total: eight gold, one silver and seven bronze, the country’s best ever performance in 11 years at the world junior event. Their achievement superseded their 2000 Santiago event, 2006 Beijing and 2010 Moncton.

MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS

The lack of spectators to cheer the athletics did  not deter the young Kenyans. Despite the lack of fans at the stadium, the host team along with the volunteers and local media at the Kasarani Stadium ensured that the athletes had sufficient moral support.

Benson Kiplangat took men’s 5000m gold as he kicked past Ethiopian Tadese Worku on the last lap. Kiplangat clocked 13:20.37 ahead of Worku’s 13.2-.65.wu5

The women’s 3000m saw Teresiah Muthoni Gateri producing a powerful finish ahead of Ethiopian Melknat Wudu to win in 8.57.78. Jackline Chepkoech won the Women’s steeplechase gold, setting a personal best of 9m 27.4 sec to claim gold for Kenya.WU20 3

Amos Serem, on the final day of the event summed up the mood when he won the men’s 3000m steeplechase title in 8.30.72. Emmanuel Wanyonyi did Kenya proud in the men’s 800m to win in a championship best of 1.43.76.

wu20 4Kenya also dominated in the men’s 1500m heats with Vincent Kibet Keter crossing the line in 3.42.35 ahead of Ethiopia’s Melkeneh Azize who finished the race in 3.44.81. Kamar Etiang put up a spirited fight for gold in the men’s 1500m against Ethiopian Wegene Addisu who finished at 3.44.86, 0.11 seconds behind Kamar.

The event also witnessed a spectacular performance from team Botswana  emerging seventh on the medal table. The team took home a total of 4 medals 3 being gold.WU20 6
